Matane

Matane

The most important city of the Coast sector has, among other things, a ferry service to the Manicouagan region, including the unique train ferry in Quebec, and also has departures for cruises to the Magdalen Islands. In the old port, walk along the promenade des Capitaines, on which you will find the Joseph-Rouleau cultural center that presents the permanent exhibition “La Couleur de la Gaspésie”. Downtown, the centre d’observation du saumon du barrage Mathieu-D’Amours proposes an exhibition about the dams and bridges of the river, and you will even get the chance to see the salmons swim up the river. Go to the fish pass and the suspended bridge leading to the parc des Îles, which is a recreational site made of islands linked by bridges. The city is split in two by the Matane River, this famous salmon river from where you can observe the fishermen at work.

Then go to the Musée La Maison Horace-Bouffard, “the six wedding house”. In this traditional country house, a guide will tell you about the fantastic story of the six Bouffard-Durette weddings, the world Guiness record of the greatest number of marriages between two families. Visit also the Jardins de Doris where you can see a large rockery, fruit trees, shrubs and perennial plants. The entire family will be enchanted by the small animal park and the three houses from the famous “three little pigs” story. You can also walk along the hiking trail in the parc des castors, running along the Matane River.

If you like nature, go to the réserve faunique de Matane, where you will find an interpretation center on moose, and viewpoints will allow you to observe them. You will also see deer, black bears, foxes, coyotes and several other small mammals. It is also possible to fish for trout and lake charr. At the Seigneurie du chevreuil d’Émilie, you will live an unforgettable experience among the 75 deer raised in a wooded site that you can even pet and feed. Two ponds are also available for trout fishing. If you want to have some fun, the Centre d’art le Barachois presents variety shows and theatre nights during summer.
