An Important Page of our History

The Battle of the Restigouche National Historic Site of Canada commemorates the last naval battle that took place between France and England for the possession of the North American territory. This war lasted 7 years. This famous battle ended on July 8, 1760 and sealed the destiny of New France.

At the interpretation centre, you will find the remnants of the French ship called Le Machault as well as a collection of objects from the wreck. This ship was coming from France to help the soldiers who had been fighting for a long time in order to keep Québec City. Unfortunately, the crew could not outsmart the British and the ship sank in the Restigouche River. Now deprived of any help, New France had no other choice than to capitulate.
